QS Quacquarelli Symonds, compilers of the QS World University Content, has partnered with personalized education and mentoring company to provide a data-driven, holistic higher education and career pathway experience that will change the way students and parents around the world prepare for future education and work.

Crimson, lauded for increasing students’ success rate for getting accepted into top-ranked universities by four to five times, brings its admissions results experience to the world-leading university rankings company, QS Quacquarelli Symonds.

The partnership has been designed to deliver an end-to-end experience to make pathways to the world’s most prestigious education and career opportunities possible - from researching best-match universities to providing college application mentoring.

Crimson’s online network of over 2000 strategists, tutors and mentors provides students with intensive academic tutoring and standardised test preparation, extracurricular and leadership mentoring, and university admissions consulting including athletic scholarship consulting. The international college counselling company also offers in-person workshops to prepare students for rewarding tertiary studies and future careers.

As the company expands its offering to operate from 24 cities, including Shanghai, San Francisco, New York City, London and Zurich, it has also appointed seasoned higher education advisors including US Treasury Secretary, Former Harvard President & Obama Economic Advisor Lawrence H. Summers as an Advisor for Social Equity & Global Access.

Crimson CEO, Jamie Beaton, 23, co-founded the holistic education and mentoring company in 2013 while completing a double degree at Harvard University, while Nunzio Quacquarelli, CEO, founder of QS, also started the company while at business school, during his MBA at The Wharton School.

I'm not happy about this at all.

Going to an internationally reputable university (and an elite university at that) is about what you stand to gain from an education at that universities, and the more you've demonstrated that you'll benefit from going to one of these universities, the more you deserve to go. As it stands, Crimson Education represents none of that. It's only students from the most affluent societies that get access to personalised admissions services like Crimson. Firstly, these companies provide a service which should be free for all, rather than being absurdly expensive. They provide information which is public knowledge, and apart from a tutoring service, everything they provide is available to the general public. As Cambridge puts it, none of these companies has access to any information that's not already available free of charge to all schools.

Secondly, services like this exacerbate the problem of equal access to top universities. While it's a recurring issue when it comes to Oxford and Cambridge, it rarely comes up elsewhere - there are extremely academically talented students from lower-income backgrounds who are put off applying to these universities, or who aren't given the same level of support or encouragement, because of their background. Access Oxbridge has it right. They're a non-profit organisation and provide their service for free to disadvantaged students, who have the most to gain from top universities. If you wanted to help encourage people to apply to top universities, you would not support a company which only aids the privileged few.
