International Scholarships to Study in the US

International Scholarships to Study in the US main image

It’s no secret that the US is one of the most expensive nations in which to pursue higher education, but don't let that put you off, as there are hundreds of opportunities to gain funding for your studies here.

As an international student, you won’t be eligible for funding intended specifically for US nationals. However, as US universities prioritize internationalization, the number of international scholarships to study in the US has grown. There are also some US universities that offer need-blind admission to international students.

Below is a selection of US scholarships for international students, some funded by the US government, some funded by private organizations and some funded by specific institutions. Good luck with your applications!

Government-funded US scholarships for international students

  •  – Perhaps the most popular government-funded US scholarships for international students, Fulbright offers scholarships for graduate students, young professionals and artists to study in the US for one year or more. Open to international students in all fields excluding medicine.
  •  – This is a non-degree scholarship program for international, experienced professionals wishing to undertake 10 months of academic study in the US. Although the funding doesn’t support degree qualifications, students are able to study and develop their knowledge at academic institutions across the nation.

Non-governmental US scholarships for international students

  • – International scholarships aimed at all overseas students studying any subject at a participating college or university in the US (of which there are 57). You should submit an essay or video demonstrate your interest and initiative in promoting intercultural learning and exchange. (The deadline for Fall 2019 entry has passed, applications will open for the 2020 round in May 2019.)
  •  – Abbey Road are offering US scholarships worth US$1,000 for language and art students, as well as US$500 fellowships for “summer enrichment” at institutions within the states.
  •  – Fully-funded scholarships are available for students from eligible countries to study in the US or another host country at master’s level.
  •  – A scholarship worth US$1,000 open to current or prospective students in the US diagnosed with autism.
  •  - Three winners will receive an award of up to $2,000. Open to all students (domestic and international, and at any study level) aged between 16 and 35. To enter, you'll need to submit a 500-word essay related to online education, multilingualism, and professional development.
  •  – Awarded twice a year to passionate international students wishing to study in the US. Worth US$1,000.

For Asian students:

  •  – Scholarships to study in the US within selected institutions, aimed at international students from the Asia-Pacific region.
  •  – An initiative run by Japan and the US, this commission offers grant programs to Japanese students wishing to study in the US (and vice versa).
  • – Scholarships for 11 exceptional Asian students to study in the US at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. Covers the full cost of tuition and student fees.

For Australian students:

  • - The Australian-American Fulbright Commission offers scholarships to Australian citizens across all career stages. Awardees take part in an academic and cultural exchange, pursuing research or study at a U.S. institution, experiencing life abroad and bringing back their knowledge and experience to share with their communities in Australia.

For female students:

  •  – Fellowships offered by the American Association of University Women for female international students to study in the US.
  •  – A scholarship offering $1,000 to a woman currently studying a sports-related degree at any US university.
  •  – US scholarships for female students of any age, ethnicity or nationality, to study at the Zaragoza Logistics Center at MIT.
  • More scholarships for minority female students are listed here.

For graduate students:

  •  – Scholarships to study in the US awarded to master’s degree students studying within one of Rotary’s Peace Centers (such as at Duke University or the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill).

For students from developing countries:

  •  – Scholarships for postgraduate international students hailing from countries in Africa.
  •  – Scholarships for African students to study in the US and Africa.

Hi Laura, My name is Oladunni. I am kind of in a dilemma. I am currently doing my Masters in Industrial and Human Factors Engineering at the Wright State University Dayton Ohio. I have gotten a scholarship of $1250 per semester but I promise you the tuition is like times 7 of that there is no way I can afford that because that is not even close to what is on my I-20 i do not want to run out of status or have cancelled classes, I have emailed about my tuition being waived but I am not sure what options of schools do you have for me that can admit me and fully fund my masters degree

Hi Laura, thank you so much for writing this, it is really helpful! My name is Jiashun, I am from China, and I am about to finish my master in psychology in June 2019, I am currently a short term scholar in Colorado USA. I got a bachelor degree of civil engineering, but I want to get in a Marriage and Family Therapy Graduate Program, so I think it would be better for me to apply for another a master here in the U.S than a PhD. But my concern is that it might be harder to have full financial aid in masters than PhDs, and my family definitely can not afford my tuition if I can not get enough financial aid. Do you think it is a good idea to apply for a PhD because it has a better chance of getting financial aids? I am not sure if this is going to be replied but thanks again!

Hii, my name is Jaykishan. I am from India. I have done my 10+2 in 2017 and now I want to complete my graduation from US university with 100% scholarship because I would not able to pay fee.plz reply me

Ok .then i am here to help yu.so what you need to do is a lot of reasearch regarding universities which offer financial aid to international student which covers 100 percent or atleast 90 percent of there tution fees .alright now here are some names which you probably can ponder upon !.harvard
2.princteon
3.amherst
4.mit
well these university offer 100 percent scholarship based on need and not on merit . you see beacuse it really hard to get in these university.
but dont worry there are certain university which offer at least 90percent of scholarsip and the rest you can pay by doing some on campus job on the university itself
the university that comes under texas system has a lots of benifits .you just need to qualiy foe a 1000 dollar scholarship and then you will also get a wavier of another 20000 dollar .thus reducing your tuition ridiculously low.you can also check some other universities like peedue ,queensland etc.
well if these all things doesnt work .then you will surely get into a univiersity in germany which takes no fees from the study .its because its goverment pay for the education thats good isn,t it. i hope this helps also you can visit to school apply .com that,s a great resource for searching and sortlisting universities that are perfect match for you

Hello Kumsal,

Could you please let me know about your school scores (GPA/or...) and the standardized test scores (SAT or ACT, if so) , and the extracurricular activites you submitted along with your other documents when you applied to Columbia University?

And, by the way, Columbia University offers 100% need-based financial aid, they also say that they are committed to meet 100% of demonstrated need.

I'd appreciate your help!
Wish you the best luck!
