Overview

Founded in 1905 as a medical college, the National University of Singapore is the oldest institute of higher education in Singapore. It offers graduate and postgraduate programs in a wide range of disciplines, including:

•Sciences

•Medicine and dentistry

•Design and environment

•Law

•Arts and social sciences

•Engineering

•Business

•Computing

•Music

Academically, NUS is often ranked first in both Singapore and the whole of Asia and has performed particularly well across various rankings for graduate employability. Undergraduates comprise the bulk of NUS students, numbering around 28,000, with approximately 10,000 students studying for postgraduate degrees.

Programs at Singapore adopt the best features from British and American universities: the tutorial system is a key characteristic of teaching, and students earn course credits as they progress academically.

Collaborations with other universities, particularly from the US, are an increasingly common feature of programs, allowing students to broaden the scope of their academic enquiries. Medicine is taught in collaboration with Duke University, with the program following the American model of postgraduate medical education, while the school’s Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music has a collaboration with the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University. In addition, Yale-NUS College is an autonomous liberal arts college within the university that is a joint project with Yale, one of the famous universities in the world.

Entrepreneurship is increasingly a key area for NUS. The university has a special division for budding businessmen and businesswomen, which features a business incubator, and the NUS Overseas Colleges program gives participants the chance to spend up to a year overseas, living, working and studying in an entrepreneurial hub.

The main NUS Kent Ridge campus, located in the south west of Singapore, spans 370 acres and houses some of the university’s main faculties. It’s connected via a foot and vehicle bridge to University Town, a recently-built complex comprising residence halls and a wealth of recreational and study resources.

Around 5,000 students live, work and learn in the vibrant student area, self-styled as UTown, which comprises study clusters that are open throughout the night, as well as discussion spaces, a learning cafe, sporting facilities and spaces for the performing arts. The Education Resource Centre is apparently equipped with 1,751 power sockets, making there no excuse not to study, and UTown’s huge climbing wall gives sporty students a refuge away from the demands of academia.
