Overview

Established only in 1994, City University of Hong Kong has lost no time making its mark on the world stage. The public research university, based in Kowloon Town in Hong Kong, is often ranked in the top 50 universities in the world and is among the top 10 higher education institutions in Asia.
The government-funded university is organized into four colleges and three schools, which gives an idea of the school’s priorities and strengths. They are the College of Business, College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, College of Science and Engineering, College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences, School of Creative Media, School of Energy and Environment and School of Law.
Situated in the heart of a bustling metropolis, CityU is smaller than many more established US schools, admitting around 20,000 students – the majority being undergraduates or taking a taught postgraduate program – and the campus covering a mere 39 acres.
However, CityU still manages to swim with the strongest, offering 50 bachelor’s programs as well as dual degree programs with the likes of Columbia University in New York. The partnership is part of CityU’s impressive international network for academic collaborations: in total it has global agreements with about 350 prestigious institutions from 40 countries/jurisdictions.
On campus accommodation is provided for 3,700 students, comprising 10 residential halls for undergrads and one for postgrads. The university aims for more of its students to live on university land and is planning to build a student hostel by 2021 at Whitehead in Ma On Shan that would provide extra accommodation for around 2,200 students.
Student life at CityU is rich with extra-curricular opportunity. The CityU students' union runs 19 societies, approximately 40 affiliated clubs and seven residents' associations. Regarded one of the best sports universities in Hong Kong, CityU boasts a five-storey sports complex which houses a multi-purpose hall and four practice gymnasiums for badminton, basketball, volleyball, martial arts and dance, and other activities.
Its academic facilities are not bad either, with the Run Shaw Shaw main library holding more than a million books in print and two million electronic books, including a special collection on English legal history.
